what to expect

The theme of this year’s hackathon is artificial intelligence. Teams will blend business development with technology to create and build AI-centered solutions, focusing on (4) distinct AI technologies.

Each of these focus areas have the potential to address critical business challenges. From generating creative content and making data-driven predictions to understanding human language and building autonomous systems, these areas offer a foundation for innovation.

  • Who can participate?
    If you are an employee of a public power entity associated with The Energy Authority, then you are welcome to participate.
  • Do I need coding skills?
    Nope! No coding experience is necessary. The hackathon problem statements will have an element of coding as part of the solution. So if you don't have a technical background, we will pair you with individuals that do.
  • How do I form a team?
    We encourage you to form a team within your own company that consists of both technical and business-(non-technical) individuals. Teams should have approx 4-6 people total.
  • What happens if I only have a partial team?
    Partial teams will be paired with other individuals with complementing skill sets.
  • Can I participate virtually?
    Given the value we've seen from teams collaborating and networking, this year's event will be fully in-person.
  • How do I sign up to a participate?
    Individuals within each of TEA's clients will receive a registration link and sign-up instructions in December 2024. We recommend reaching out to your manager to coordinate forming a team in the meantime.
  • When will the schedule be provided?
    A high-level schedule will be shared upon registration, with additional details provided as the event date approaches. Please review the Schedule page for details about the meetings held before the event.
  • When will the problem statements be provided?
    Problem statements will be provided at the Event's kickoff on March 3, 2025.
  • Will there be a prize?
    Members of the winning team will receive trophies and bragging rights
  • How should I be prepare for the hackathon?
    Prior to the event, there will be several virtual info sessions that will review the TEA provided AI toolkit and how to access these tools. We strongly encourage all participants to attend these sessions live. Recordings of the info sessions will also be made available for those unable to attend.
  • Can TEA provide me with a laptop for this event?
    TEA has a limited amount of laptops available. Instructions on how to request a laptop will be provided during the info sessions, prior to the event.
  • Will I need to install AI tools on my laptop?
    For this event, we encourage participants to use the AI tools provided in the TEA AI Sandbox. This means that you will not need to install any tools directly onto your laptop.
  • What if I want to use my own AI tools (ones that aren't in the TEA AI Sandbox)?
    We strongly encourage you to use the tools provided in the TEA AI Sandbox. But if you have a favorite tool to use that's not in the Sandbox, we will allow it. We will ask participants to inform us of any outside tools prior to the event. We will disclose to all participants what outside tools are being requested so that other teams have the opportunity to research or use them prior to the event.
  • Will relevant data sets be provided for each problem statement?
    Yes, the problem statements will have a dataset to get you started. In addition, we will also provide some guidance on how to create additional data sets if you decide that you need it.
  • What are the arrangements for travel and food?
    Details about travel and lodging will be provided in the registration link. Food will be provided during the event.
